What is SSL

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and its successor, Transport Layer Security (TLS), are protocols, or layers, sandwiched between the transport layer (e.g., TCP/IP) and the application layer (e.g., HTTP) that provide communication security through encryption and authentication of communicating parties. TLS/SSL is most commonly used for secure communication with web servers using HTTPS, which is a secure version of HTTP. Once a TLS/SSL connection (session) is established, communication between the server and client is encrypted and therefore secure.
